Sunrise Midwifery is a busy homebirth practice based in Mesa, Arizona. As an apprentice with Sunrise Midwifery you will gain experience in all areas of midwifery including record keeping and client care, prenatal care, monitoring labor, homebirth, postpartum care for mother and newborn etc..
In addition to midwifery skills, you’ll also learn about the business aspects of running a midwifery practice.
You’ll learn practical skills including:
Maintaining client charts
Filing forms
Record keeping
Ordering and stocking supplies
Creating forms and protocols for a homebirth practice
Preparing and filing birth certificates
Preparing insurance claims
Sunrise Midwifery requires that you enroll with a midwifery education program in order to complete the academic portion of your training. (The National College of Midwifery, Michigan School of Traditional Midwifery, Aviva Institute, Ancient Art Midwifery Institute, Midwife to Be, etc.) You will have the opportunity to experience hands on learning as you participate with prenatal care, labor support, natural birth, postpartum care etc.

Fetal heart tones (use of fetoscope)

Use of midwifery equipment

Pap's and well women care
Upon completion of your apprenticeship you'll be prepared and eligible to test for midwifery licensure in Arizona. The entire program may take anywhere from 3 - 5 years to complete.
The following is a list of requirements to consider if you are interested in pursing an apprenticeship with Sunrise Midwifery:
Enroll in an academic midwifery program
Register with the state as an apprentice (5 years to complete)
Be available to attend prenatal visits (including Saturday’s)
Be on call and available for births 24 hours / 7 days a week
Be available to attend home visits & postpartum visits
Have reliable transportation
Have reliable babysitting arrangements
Maintain a cell phone and pager
Be available to travel in the Phoenix metro area as well as occasional out of town births
Midwifery training requires complete dedication. You'll be expected to be available days, evenings and weekends. Sometimes you'll be away from your family and children for 24 hours or more. It is usually not possible to work another job during your training. You must be willing to commit your time and energy and in return you will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience in midwifery.
